In the mid 1800’s men were put to rest, dressed head to toe in the finest attire, but a taller top hat meant added cost for the coffin, so the shorter “Deadman” top hat style was adopted. This style of top hat allowed men to be buried in a standard size coffin while looking quite dapper.
